Call For Submissions

With the themes Music Theory in Brazil – Intercontinental Dialogues and Music and Mathematics – Intercontinental Dialogues, the Brazilian Association of Musical Theory and Analysis (TeMA) and the MusMat Research Group announce jointly the III Congress of TeMA / IV International Congress of Music and Mathematics.

The event will take place from October 21 to 25, 2019 in Rio de Janeiro and will offer lectures, conferences, thematic tables, communications sessions and artistic programming (concerts). The Postgraduate Program in Music at UFRJ and the Engineering Club of Rio de Janeiro and the Postgraduate Program in Music at UNIRIO also take part in the event.

The call for submissions is open from June 30 to August 30, 2019.

The event proposes to discuss essentially the state of the art in the field of music theory and analysis, in dialogue with the theoretical bases of other continents, mainly the United States and Canada, Europe, and Latin America. Some theoretical fields considered more present in national academic works were selected for debate, such as 1) Tonal theories; 2) Post-Tonal theories; 3) Rhythmic and metric theories; 4) Theories of texture; 5) Theories of popular music; 6) Modern theories and technologies.

The congress will be attended by international guests: Gabriel Pareyon (University of Guadalajara), Jean-Pierre Briot (IRCAM / CNRS), Patrick McCreless (Yale University) and Robert Morris (Rochester University / Eastman School of Music) as well as renowned names nationwide.

For the submission (individual or collective), eight modalities were defined:

  1. Dialogues between composition and analysis;
  2. Objectivity and subjectivity in music analysis;
  3. Cognitive perspectives in music theory and analysis;
  4. Systematic perspectives in music theory and analysis;
  5. Interdisciplinarity in music theory and analysis;
  6. Cultural perspectives in music theory and analysis;
  7. Methodological strategies in teaching theory and music analysis;
  8. Theories and methodologies of computer-assisted musical composition and analysis.

Submission is open between June 30 and August 30, 2019.


1. Submission process

Each author may submit a maximum of three (03) extended abstracts for evaluation, considering authorship and co-authorship. The texts should be exclusively sent in PDF format to the electronic address of the Congress (tema.musmat.2019@musica.ufrj.br). Any questions should be submitted through the same e-mail address. Omitted cases will be decided by the Organizing Committee of TeMA / MusMat Congress. A second call, contemplating the complete texts for publication in the proceedings, will be later open to the participants of the event, with a deadline finishing at March 31, 2020.

2. The paper

The submitted papers, in extended abstract format, must have been originated from academic research and have not yet been published nor presented on a previous event. The text should explain problem, objectives, theoretical assumptions, and methodological procedures, as well as it should highlight final results (in the case of a completed study) or consistent preliminary analysis, and the conclusions obtained.

The official language of the Congress is Portuguese, but works in Spanish and English will also be accepted.

3. Category and presentation criteria

The category of presentation of the extended abstracts to be submitted will be the “oral presentation”, according to the following criteria:

  1. Presentations should be made by the author(s) or co-author(s) of the paper.
  2. Each presentation will last 30 minutes, with 20 minutes for the presentation of the work, followed by 10 minutes of discussion.

4. Formatting

A. The submission format should include the following specifications:

  1. Page in A4 format, portrait orientation, 3 cm for top and left margins, and 2 cm for lower and right margins. In case of multiple pages, the number should be positioned in the right bottom corner.
  2. All papers must be written in Times New Roman font (or Liberation, in case of open source environments), size 12.
  3. Line spacing should be 1.5 line.

B. The content must be presented in the following order and with the following specifications:

  1. Title – bold, centralized
  2. Name of the author – the name of the author should not be included in the file since the evaluation will be anonymous. Works with the author identification will be disregarded.
  3. Abstract in itself – in regular font, with 500 to 600 words, (except for bibliographical references), justified. The content of the text should contemplate, in a clear and succinct manner, the definition of the object, methodology, theoretical reference, objectives and, where applicable, partial or definitive results of the research. The text should be contained in a single paragraph.
  4. Keywords – three to five keywords, separated by a dot, according to ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical Standards).
  5. Illustrations – the illustrations (Figures, Examples, Tables, Boxes) should be appended after the keywords, and referenced in the abstract text. They should not take more than one page.
  6. Bibliographical References – alignment to the left, following the norms of the ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical Norms).

5. Verification Items for Submission

  1. The submission has not yet been published, nor is it under consideration for publication by another conference or periodical (or provide explanations in the field Comments to the Organizing Committee).
  2. The submission file is in PDF format.
  3. All URLs in the text (e.g. http://pkp.sfu.ca) are live and ready to click.
  4. The text is in simple space; it uses a 12-point font; it uses italic instead of underlining (except URL addresses); the figures and tables are inserted between the keywords and the Bibliographical References.
  5. Author names have been removed, with “Author” and year used in bibliography and footnotes, instead of the author name, document title, etc.

6. Copyright Statement

Authors who submit to this conference agree to the following terms:

  1. Authors retain copyrights on the works, allowing the conference to place them under a Creative Commons Attribution License, which freely allows others to access, use and share them with the authorship credit and initial submission at this conference.
  2. Authors may waive the terms of the CC license and set additional contracts for non-exclusive distribution and subsequent publication of their works (e. g. to publish an updated version in a journal, make available in institutional repository, or publish it in a book), with the authorship credit and the initial presentation at this conference.
  3. In addition, authors are encouraged to publish and share their work online (e. g. in an institutional repository or on their personal page) at any time after the conference.

7. Privacy Policy

The names and addresses given to this conference will be used exclusively for the services provided by this event and will not be made available for other purposes or to third parties.

8. Subscription

  1. The work accepted for the Congress must be presented by at least one of its authors, who must be registered at the Congress (see registration page). The works that do not meet this condition, will not be published in the proceedings of the event.
  2. The decision of the scientific committee will be published on August 30, 2019, and the full schedule on September 9, 2019.
  3. The subscriptions will be made through an online system, to be published on the program’s website (https://ppgm.musica.ufrj.br/congresso-tema-musmat-2019), and during the Congress, in person.
  4. The author (or first author, in the case of multiple authors) must, necessarily, be a member of TeMA. The adhesion can be made after the submission result, within the deadline stipulated in the event schedule, and in accordance with the rules of the association, present on the TeMA membership page (http://tema.mus.br/adesao/).
  5. TeMA and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro will not have financial support for the participants. An official letter of invitation for the management of support will be sent to those who request it. Institutions that contribute to the funding of participants will be officially recognized.
