Created in 1980 as the first Graduate Music Program in the country, PPGM-UFRJ accumulates a history of relevant services provided to music research in Brazil. Its pioneering spirit and its geographical centrality made the program, during its four decades, an important formation center for researchers.
A survey of the outcome of their graduates indicates a significant history of nucleation. The current institutional affiliation of many of the program’s more than 500 masters and first doctors is a testament to the impact of PPGM-UFRJ on the various fields of music research and practice, in almost all regions of the country and in its most prominent universities and institutions: UNIRIO, PUC-Rio, USP, UNESP, UFMG, UFJF, UEMG, UFV, UFSJ, UFES, FAMES, UFPR, UFSM, UFPel, UFPB, UFPE, UFCE, UECE, UFSB, UFRN, UFMA, UFMT, UFG, Cap-UFRJ, FAETEC-RJ, CEFET-RJ, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Pedro II College, Villa-Lobos Music School, SESC-RJ, Espírito Santo Symphony Orchestra and UFF, Museum of Image and Sound, in addition to the State and Municipal Education Departments of Rio de Janeiro, Itaperuna and Vitória, among others.In the year of celebration of its 40 years of uninterrupted activity, the Graduate Program in Music of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro renews its commitment to the principles of artistic and academic excellence that guided the action of its founders and first faculty members.
